Recovery is often the most dreaded part of the plastic surgery process and can deter patients from receiving treatment. But recovery is nothing to be afraid of, and with the right knowledge, you can ensure a smooth recovery process for successful results!

Manage discomfort

The amount of discomfort you experience after treatment with liposuction will vary from patient to patient. This will depend on the location of the treatment area, the size of the treatment area, your individual pain tolerance, and whether you received sedation or anesthesia. For those who receive intravenous sedation during their procedure, discomfort is usually very mild. But for those under anesthesia, you might need a prescription pain medication to help manage discomfort. It is important not to take any blood thinning medication such as ibuprofen, Aleve, or Advil for the first few weeks as this could increase bruising and bleeding, leading to a longer recovery. You will also likely be provided with a compression garment that can be worn to minimize swelling and discomfort.

Get moving to increase circulation

You’ll want to take it easy while you’re recovering, but you shouldn’t just lay in bed all day. In fact, you’ll likely be instructed to get moving and walking around as soon as the next day. This ensures proper circulation to reduce any chance of blood clotting and to speed up your body’s healing process. You can begin light exercise and slowly build up to your regular exercise level over the course of your recovery with your surgeon's approval and if you’re comfortable.

Eat right and stay hydrated

Your body will be extra vulnerable during your recovery process, so make sure you give it everything it needs to stay healthy. This includes eating light, healthy meals and drinking plenty of water. It’s important to continue eating a healthy diet even after recovery to ensure you maintain your weight. Although fat cells cannot return to the treated area, you can still gain weight in other areas of your body. Maintaining a healthy weight and getting regular exercise can ensure that you receive long-lasting results from your liposuction procedure.
