Sometimes, men and women can feel that their chin is not proportionate to the rest of their face. A weak chin can make the nose appear larger than it really is. Chin enhancement can be done using facial implants to help the chin and jaw to appear more prominent to enhance the facial appearance. For patients in the Miami, FL area, Dr. Andrés Sárraga at the ARTIS Institute for Plastic Surgery in Aventura can provide chin implants with beautiful results.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR CHIN IMPLANTS?

Men and women who are living with a recessed chin, pointed chin, prominent nose, or fleshy neck may be good candidates for a chin implant. However, those who are in poor health, have taken Accutane® within the past six months, or take anticoagulants may not be good candidates for a chin implant. In addition, chin implant patients should be nonsmokers or willing to quit smoking prior to the surgery and throughout the healing process. A consultation with Dr. Sarraga can help to determine if you can benefit from this procedure.

During your consultation, Dr. Sarraga will evaluate your overall health and your aesthetic goals to recommend whether chin implants are your best option. For some patients, procedures such as rhinoplasty, facelift or neck lift, liposuction, or Kybella injections may be better options to meet their goals. Dr. Sarraga may also suggest pairing these procedures with chin implants to enhance the overall results and create a proportionate, beautiful, and natural look. For patients who are unsure about making permanent changes to their appearance, dermal fillers may be a better option compared to chin implants. Dr. Sárraga may also recommend that patients try dermal filler injections to have a sense of their possible results before deciding to undergo surgery.

WHAT ARE CHIN IMPLANTS?

Chin implants are often made from silicone or GORE-TEX® and can be custom made to fit your face. These implants are flexible yet firm, so they will look and feel natural once in place. The shape and size of the chin implants used varies depending on the patient’s natural anatomy and goal results. The type of chin implant that is best for you can be discussed during your initial consultation.

THE CHIN IMPLANT PROCEDURE

During your chin implant procedure, surgical markings will be drawn on the face using a washable marker to indicate where the implant will be placed. This will also help Dr. Sarraga to know which underlying structures he should avoid. Anesthesia will be applied, and then the surgery will begin.

A small incision will be created in the chin or mouth between the gum and lower lip, creating a pocket in the facial tissue. The chin implant will then be placed inside this pocket and in front of the jawbone. The chin implant is then sutured into place. Any incisions will be closed, commonly using dissolvable sutures.

RECOVERY AFTER CHIN IMPLANT SURGERY

Following surgery, patients can expect to experience some swelling in the face and neck. Patients should sleep with their head elevated to help lessen this swelling. Ice packs can also be used to help reduce swelling, which should resolve within 10-14 days.

Prescription pain medication can be prescribed following surgery to help with any discomfort. After surgery, patients should stick to meals that do not require excessive chewing. Also, patients should be aware of any stitches that were placed in the mouth while eating.

The exact amount of downtime needed will depend on your individual surgery and can be determined by Dr. Sarraga.

CHIN IMPLANT RESULTS

Results from chin implant surgery can typically be seen within about two weeks when a majority of swelling subsides; these results will continue to improve as all residual swelling resolves. Once healing is complete, chin implant results are more or less permanent. In some uncommon cases, chin implants may shift or become misaligned. If this occurs, or if patients are otherwise with their chin implant results, a second surgery is required and the implant can be removed. However, most patients are pleased with the results of their chin implant procedures long-term and enjoy a more balanced, proportionate appearance for many years after the surgery.
