There are many factors that can cause a women’s breasts to lose its youthful shape, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, fluctuations in weight, aging, gravity, and hereditary reasons. A breast lift procedure can help to rejuvenate the breasts to a perkier position.

What is a Breast Lift?

Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Sometimes, the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.

However, a breast lift is primarily meant to change the positioning of the breasts to a more youthful position; it cannot change the size of the breasts or improve upper pole fullness. If you wish to augment the size of your breasts, you may want to look into breast augmentation surgery.

The Breast Lift Procedure

The technique used during your breast lift procedure will be dependent upon the size and shape of your breasts, the size and position of your areolas, the amount of sagging in the breasts, and the skin quality of your breasts. Dr. Sarraga will work with you to determine which technique works best for your individual goals, lifestyle, and budget.

The breast lift procedure can be done using a selection of incision options. These include the peri-areolar incision, which is made around the areola, the “lollipop” incision, which is made around the areola and down to the breast crease, and the “anchor” incision, which is created around the areola, down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease as well. After the appropriate incisions are made, Dr. Sarraga will lift and shape underlying breast tissue. The nipple and areola may also need to be repositioned to a more youthful position. Excess skin will be removed, and any remaining skin will be tightened, and incisions closed.

After your breast lift procedure, you may be required to wear a special surgical bra to help assist with healing and control swelling. Swelling and bruising are common, but prescribed pain medication can help to control any discomfort. While recovery time will vary from patient to patient, most individuals can return to a desk job after a week. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a month, and patients can slowly return to their everyday routines.
