Breast Augmentation

in Aventura, Florida

Some people feel that having small breasts not only limits their choice of clothing but can also cause dissatisfaction with their overall body image. To that end, breast augmentation can help increase the fullness and projection of the breasts to improves the silhouette of a woman’s figure and enhance their self-confidence.

About Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure that can dramatically enhance the appearance of a female’s breasts. Augmentation is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgical procedures and may also have a very positive effect on the individual’s comfort level, confidence, and self-image.

This procedure is far from a one-size-fits-all technique, as there are many options to be had when considering your goals and anatomy. Consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Andrés Sárraga is the best way to know how to achieve the most natural yet enhanced look from your breast enhancement surgery.

Good Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Anyone looking to increase the volume and fullness of their breasts may be a good candidate for this Miami plastic surgery procedure. In addition, Dr. Sárraga may recommend eligible breast augmentation patients be:

  • At or near their ideal body weight
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally healthy with no underlying health concerns

Breast Implant Types

Breast implants utilize several different materials to provide a customizable look and feel from breast augmentation surgery. In addition to filler material, you can also take advantage of different shapes, sizes, and even textures for the most personal results.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants provide an increased breast size with a sterile saltwater solution. These have the advantage of being able to be inserted before being filled, meaning the incision is shorter for these implants. However, patients have noted that these do not feel as much like natural breast tissue as silicone implants, and they can cause visible rippling in some cases.

Silicone Breast Implants

Pre-filled with a safe, sterile silicone gel, silicone breast implants feel more like breast tissue than saline, but require a longer incision. It won’t be as obvious if a rupture or leak occurs with these implants, as the gel cannot be absorbed by the body. In any implant, these complications need to be corrected by removing and replacing the implant.

Gummy Bear Implants

A newer development, so-called “gummy bear” implants are made with a form-stable silicone that won’t leak gel the same way that other silicone implants do. These implants provide the natural tissue benefits of silicone gel with a lower risk of rupture and leakage.

Incision Implant Options

Breast augmentation patients may have multiple options for incision placement, including under the breast fold, around the areola, or even under the arm depending on their unique surgical plan with Dr. Sárraga.

Inframammary Incision

The most common incision that provides Dr. Sárraga with the most visibility and access to the placement site is the inframammary incision. The resulting scar can be concealed in most clothing, underwear, and swimwear.

Periareolar Incision

In some cases, a periareolar incision can be used to place the implants. This leaves a scar that is easily concealable as it is hidden in the natural transition from the areolar skin pigment to the breast skin.

Transaxillary Incision

Some patients may opt for or be recommended this alternate incision, which leaves no visible scarring on the breasts, rather using the underarm as the opening for breast implant insertion.

Implant Placement

There are three placement options that plastic surgeons have for breast implant surgery in Miami, FL. One option is the subglandular placement, which places the implant above the pectoralis muscle in the chest. Another option is to insert it under this muscle, called submuscular placement.

The third technique is called dual plane augmentation. The implant is placed partly under the muscle and partly under the gland. Dr. Sárraga feels that this positioning gives the breast the most natural implant enhancement result as the breast tissue, muscle, and implant are all in synchrony.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

To ensure the safety and comfort of patients, Dr. Sárraga usually performs breast augmentations under general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. After you are sedated, he will make the pre-determined incision and insert your chosen implants to the desired location. After closing your incisions, you will be taken to a post-op recovery room where you will be monitored until you are cleared to leave. You will need to have a caregiver drive you to and from our surgery center on the day of the procedure and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Additional Plastic Surgery Procedures

Dr. Sárraga is able to perform multiple surgeries at the same time for increased breast enhancement if desired. The most common combination procedure is the breast lift, which may be recommended for women with sagging breasts, whether due to age, weight loss, or excess volume. A breast lift surgically lifts and tightens the breasts, and when paired with augmentation, can provide a dramatic change in breast appearance.

Women who only desire a slight increase in breast volume may consider fat transfer breast augmentation as opposed to implants. This surgery uses liposuction to harvest fat from other areas of the body, most commonly the hips or belly, and re-inject it into the breasts for subtle but permanent breast enlargement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are breast implants under warranty?

All implant companies have different warranties, most of them have coverage up to 10 years - some of them longer. Each company has their own policy regarding capsular contracture, broken implants or need for further surgery.

Can I move my arms after breast augmentation?

Yes you may move your arms, as long as it is comfortable. If the implants are placed under the muscle I ask that you limit your chest or back muscle exercises as this may push your implants down.

Can you breast feed after breast augmentation

It is possible to breastfeed with breast implants. The augmentation procedure does not typically disrupt the milk ducts in the breasts, so women should still be able to produce milk and breastfeed without problems. Breast feeding is also considered safe after breast augmentation.

Do breast implants cause autoimmune disease?

This is a very debated topic; my opinion is that breast implants (like any foreign body implanted) can trigger an immune reaction in patients who are predisposed to have autoimmune conditions.

Can breast implants last 30 years?

30 years is way longer than the lifetime of the implant. The shell or outer covering of the implant starts to degrade after 10 years and the risk of the implant breaking is higher and rises every year.

Do you have to replace breast implants every 10 years?

Breast implants do not have an expiration date per se but the manufacturer recommendation is that they should be replaced after 10 years. They should also be replaced if they rupture or start causing problems in the breast tissue; such as pain, discomfort, hardening or other symptoms. You do not need to automatically replace the implants after 10 years, but should continue with your scheduled and  recommended monitoring depending on your age and history.

Are silicone implants safe?

Both silicone and saline implants are considered safe for breast augmentation and reconstruction procedures. A thorough discussion about your options for breast enhancement is done during your consultation.

Can fat be transferred to breasts?

Yes fat can be used as a natural volume enhancement. It involves removing fat from another part of the body using liposuction and reinjecting back into the breast. It works best for patients who have a nice breast shape and like a natural look

How do I know if my breast implant is leaking?

Depends on what kind of implant you have; a saline implant leak will be obvious as it will deflate and you will have a slowly deflating breast. The older generation breast gel implants (implanted before 2000) can have hard signs of a leak like swelling or obvious breast deformity (misshapen) or soft signs such as discomfort, onset of new pain. To verify a gel implant leak an ultrasound or MRI can be done.
