While a healthy lifestyle can be sufficient for some, others may find that they are living with deposits of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is a great option to eliminate these stubborn fat deposits for long-term, natural-looking results
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction surgery can sculpt the body by eliminating excess pockets of fat. The areas most commonly treated using liposuction include the buttocks, hips, love handles, thighs, calves, breasts, back, arms, and neck. Liposuction can also be combined with other body procedures to further improve the shape of the body.
Individuals who have a minimal amount of excess skin with good skin elasticity can often see good results from liposuction. A consultation with Dr. Sarraga can help to determine if this procedure can help you obtain a slimmer body silhouette.
It is important to understand that liposuction is meant to eliminate excess fatty deposits; it is not meant to eliminate excess sagging skin.

The Liposuction Procedure
There are multiple forms of liposuction done today. The most common are tumescent liposuction and suction-assisted liposuction (SAL). Tumescent liposuction involves using a solution mixed with a local anesthetic that will cause blood vessels to shrink or constrict. This technique minimized blood loss during the liposuction procedure. Suction-assisted liposuction draws out fat using a cannula with a vacuum attached.
The type of liposuction performed will depend on your individual goals and the suggestion of Dr. Sarraga.

Liposculpture is a variation of power-assisted liposuction in which the body is specifically sculpted to give the patient more muscle tone and contour. While this procedure is invasive, the scarring is minimal. This procedure is intended for treating small pockets of fat, rather than as a weight loss surgery. Liposculpture can be a great procedure for kick-starting a weight loss and exercise program or as a little extra help for areas not responding to a healthy lifestyle.
The Liposculpture Procedure
Liposculpture procedures use a power-assisted tumescent technique which allows for a more detailed approach. The tumescent technique minimizes bruising and blood loss, and therefore will reduce scarring. Once a fluid local anesthetic is injected into the fat, thin metal cannulas are inserted into the body through tiny incisions in the skin. These tubes will then remove the fat and suction it out. This procedure is best applied on someone with good skin elasticity as well as strong muscles. Liposculpture will not be helpful for patients that have weakened muscles and loose skin due to either age or pregnancy. In that case, we a tummy tuck or body lift may be more effective for that patient.
Liposculpture recovery is will change and improve through a few stages. You’ll see results immediately after surgery, but swelling and bruising may be more noticeable than the results at first. A moderate amount of swelling and bruising is normal and will likely take a few weeks to resolve. Most patients will see final results six months’ post-surgery. This is because the body will continue to heal and adjust to the new concentration of fat cells. Dr. Sarraga recommends that patients take off at least a week from work and your regular routine. However, you will not want to be completely sedentary during this time in order to prevent blood clots. Regular and light walking will help prevent blood clots as we as lessening the swelling. As far as heavy exercise and other strenuous activities go, patients should avoid anything of that nature for two to three weeks.
Liposuction results will be immediately apparent but will improve when swelling and fluid retention subside during recovery. Bruising may also occur. Any discomfort can easily be controlled with pain medication. Overall, recovery time will vary from patient to patient, depending on the size of the area treated.
