Over time, life events can take a toll on our bodies. Childbirth, significant weight loss and aging can all cause the genital structures to change, resulting in self-consciousness and unhappiness or even pain and discomfort. Labiaplasty can help to improve these changes for a more confident you. As with any type of plastic surgery, it is crucial to choose an experienced surgeon for a safe and effective procedure in a comfortable environment. Dr. Andrés Sárraga at the ARTIS Institute for Plastic Surgery offers labiaplasty in Aventura, FL, conveniently located near the Miami area.

WHAT IS A LABIAPLASTY?

A labiaplasty is a procedure whereby the external aspect of the female genitalia may be enhanced or reduced. Some women are genetically predisposed to have larger labia that they may consider unattractive or can be a source of irritation or discomfort during intimacy or even during daily activities or exercise. There are also instances where there is excess skin around the area which has become loose (the Mons pubis) and may be uncomfortable, this is an area that can also be modified with the use of surgery, micro liposuction and fat grafting. Labiaplasty may be chosen for the inner or outer labia (labia majora or labia minora) or both. The procedure can be utilized to create a more symmetrical appearance overall as needed.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LABIAPLASTY?

A majority of patients who are generally healthy overall are good candidates for labiaplasty. There are several reasons why patients may choose labiaplasty. Many opt for the surgery after damage following childbirth. Patients may find that excessive tissue causes pain or discomfort during certain activities including exercise or sexual intercourse. This pain or discomfort may even affect patients when wearing tight clothing, limiting their choices. Others may feel self-conscious about their appearance and choose labiaplasty for purely cosmetic reasons. A labiaplasty can also be chosen to create a more symmetrical appearance. Prior to undergoing a labiaplasty, patients should be nonsmokers and have reasonable expectations for their results. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga will review your health and goals to determine whether labiaplasty is right for you.

THE LABIAPLASTY PROCEDURE

Today, most labiaplasty procedures are done through laser vaginal rejuvenation. The laser will act like a scalpel and allows Dr. Sarraga more control for a precise incision with less bleeding. Prior to the procedure, the labial or vulval contours will be marked with a surgical marker and sutures will be placed. The laser will then remove excess tissues following these markings, and absorbable sutures will be used to close any incisions. Labiaplasty incisions are typically made using one of two basic techniques: trim or wedge. In a trim labiaplasty, excess tissue is cut away from the area directly. In a wedge labiaplasty, a triangular or pie-shaped section of tissue is removed from the labia. Wedge labiaplasty is more likely to maintain the natural shape or borders of the labia, though trim labiaplasty may be recommended for some patients to achieve their desired results.

Labiaplasty may be completed under either general anesthesia or local sedation. When possible, local sedation is often recommended to reduce recovery times and the potential for complications. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga will explain the details of the unique treatment plan for your labiaplasty.

LABIAPLASTY RECOVERY AND RESULTS

Following your labiaplasty, you may experience some bruising and swelling. Minor discomfort may also be present, which can be controlled with medication. It is advised that patients take off 5-7 days to recover. Patients should refrain from sexual intercourse for one-month post-surgery.

Since labiaplasty surgery is a personalized procedure, Dr. Sarraga will give you a list of personalized instructions for recovery. Generally speaking, patients often utilize ice packs or cold compresses to reduce swelling or discomfort, and some pain medication may be prescribed. Patients frequently find that the labiaplasty recovery period is less severe than they may have expected. Results can be seen within about a week as swelling subsides. Scarring is typically well-concealed within the natural contours of the anatomy, and it is unlikely that any visible scarring will be present. There is a chance that patients will experience changes in sensation after labiaplasty, but this is uncommon.
