While laser treatments are incredible for removing unwanted pigment, resurfacing the skin, and providing overall improvement, the aftermath can sometimes be hard to deal with while you wait to see results. Here are some tips that you can follow to help your skin heal faster and more comfortably.

Avoid the Sun

During the winter and early spring, it’s easier to stay out of the sun, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t protect your skin every day – especially after a laser treatment. The skin will be more vulnerable to sunburns, which could cause damage to the delicate healing skin. When choosing a sunscreen, you will want to choose one without fragrance that protects against both UVA and UVB with an SPF of at least 30.

Fight Inflammation

After laser treatments, your skin will react with redness, sensitivity and sometimes swelling. This part of the healing process can be particularly uncomfortable but can be made better by icing and promoting circulation. To soothe the treatment area, apply cold compresses for 15-20 minutes at a time to help lower skin temperature and inflammation. Also, If swelling persists, elevating your head with an extra pillow at night can help with proper drainage.

Choose the Right Products

After laser treatments, it’s important that you are careful about what products you put on your skin. Your skin is going to be far more sensitive after treatments, so you will need to hold off on physical and chemical exfoliants, retinoids and anything with fragrance. One to two weeks may be needed before patients can return to using products containing these elements. As your skin heals you will want to make sure that its remains moisturized and protected. Occlusive moisturizers that prevent water and moisture loss may be helpful for chapped and delicate skin.
