CO2 Laser Resurfacing
in Aventura, Florida
Smooth your skin and freshen your appearance: CO2 laser helps remove deeper lines and wrinkles from around the mouth. It is also frequently used for treating the fine lines and “crepiness” of the skin just below the eyes and elsewhere.
What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
CO2, or carbon dioxide laser, is an ablative laser that is generally used to treat obvious lines or deep wrinkles. It is usually done with sedation or general anesthesia in combination with local anesthesia. These treatments require several days to a week or more to recover. After the initial recovery, the treated areas will frequently remain pink or red for several months. Makeup can generally be used to cover the redness after six to ten days. Dr. Sarraga will also discuss a tailored skin care regime to care for your smoother and more radiant skin.
Many people have the misconception that this type of treatment may cause loss of pigment of the skin, it typically does not. The treatment that may cause this loss of pigment is a deep chemical peel such as a croton oil or phenol peel.
How does CO2 Laser Resurfacing Work?
Perhaps no advance in medicine has had more of an impact than the development of laser procedures. Lasers work by emitting a powerful beam of light which causes a superficial destruction of some specific portion of the skin. As new, healthy cells replace layers of the treated removed skin cells, the skin becomes smoother and more wrinkle-free. Lasers are effective for treating sun-damaged skin, mild acne scarring, age spots and skin discolorations, and many facial scars and wrinkles.

The carbon dioxide laser is an ablative (a more aggressive) laser used to target water in the tissues. It works by smoothing imperfections in the skin and diminishing the appearance of deep and superficial wrinkles in your forehead, cheeks, and around your mouth and eyes. It is one of the more powerful tools that Dr. Sarraga uses to improve the tissue quality and smoothness; he commonly combines it with his surgeries.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Patients who are experiencing sun damage, irregular pigmentation, sagging, or aging skin can often benefit from CO2 Laser Resurfacing. However, this treatment works best on lighter skin tones, as darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation. Typically Dr. Sarraga will discuss a specific regime of skin care after the procedure tailored to your type of skin. It is important to let Dr. Sarraga know of any topical treatments you may be using on your face or medications that you are taking. Women who are pregnant or those who have used Accutane within the last six months should not undergo this treatment.
